This study was conducted to investigate the incidence of intestinal parasites among the school children in Gaza Strip., 2000 Fecal specimens were collected from school children of both sexes, their ages ranged between 6 to 15 years and the specimens were collected from four districts of Gaza Strip., Jabalia, Beit hanoun, Deir el balah and Gaza town. The results obtained during a period of 18 months showed that a total of 316 Samples out of 2000 were positive for the presence of parasites, with incidence rate of 15.8%, the most frequent parasites detected out of 316 positive samples were Entamoeba histolytica 38.6%, Giardia lamblia 22.8%, Strongyloides stercoralis 11.0%, Ascaris lumbricoides 9.5%, Trichuris trichiura 7.3%, Cryptosporidium Parvum 6.6% and Hymenolepis nana 4.1%. The highest incidence rate in proportion to the total number of investigated samples was recorded in Jabalia area 17.0% followed by Deir el balah area 16.6%, Beit hanoun 15.6% and Gaza town 14.0%. The infection rate was higher in younger age group (6->9 years) in which several of pupils reported variable symptoms like abdominal pain, cramps, weight loss, diarrhea, and anorexia. The rate of infection was higher in children from over crowded areas, rural areas, low income families and it was reported more in male than female pupils. |
