Feb 9, 2016 - Al-Azhar University-Gaza (AUG) welcomed Mr. Brendan Mcsharry - the British Council Director and Mr. Suhail Tarazi- the Director of the British Council Programs in the Gaza strip. They were received by Prof. Dr. Sami Musleh; Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Sami Abu Nasser-the Dean of Faculty of Engineeing and Information Technology,Dr. Mazen Hamada; Head of the President Office, Dr. Samir Ismail; Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Awni Abu Samaan- Assistant of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Afnan Alqadri; from the International Relations Unit. In the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Awni Abu Samaan welcomed Mr. McSharry and Mr. Tarazi to AUG. He also thanked them for their continuous support and their many partnerships which include many qualitative programs that benefit many university staff members and students such as the HESPAL Scholarship Program, Chevening Scholarship Program and Positive Dialogue Program. Moreover, Dr. Abu Samaan mentioned the many educational conferences AUG held for its staff and students. Furthermore, he added that six students from AUG were granted the HESPAL scholarship and had the opportunity to pursue their postgraduate studied at UK universities. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Musleh gave a briefing about the university and its faculties, referring to the prestigious awards obtained by the university members. In turn, Mr. McSharry thanked AUG for its warm welcoming. He discussed the fruitful cooperation between the British Council and AUG. He also added that the British Council is very interested in the cultural cooperation and getting to know more about the Palestinian culture in general through illustrative videos in both Arabic and English languages. In the same context, Dr. Hamada suggested opening a British Corner at AUG to organize events and training workshops for students and to exchange cultural activities. Dr. Ismail then talked about the Faculty of Medicine's achievements, especially opening the new high Family Medicine Diploma and the necessity to ease the exchange programs for medical students to be able to perform their future duty as physicians to the fullest. At the end of the meeting, a documentary film about AUG and its faculties was screened and it was followed by a tour to the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. During the tour, the delegation met a number of students and members of the faculty and learned about their projects and the obstacles they face. The delegates talked about their recent applied projects, especially projects that concern the students of special needs. They also met students and staff members who were awarded scholarship from the British Council.
