Thalassemia: Reality and Ambition




Apr 12, 2016 – Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences -Department of Laboratory Medicine organized a scientific day in collaboration with Thalassemia Patients' Friends Society (TPFS)-Palestine. The scientific day, entitled " Thalassemia: Reality and Ambition", was attended by Prof. Dr. Ali An Najar, Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Salama, a member of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Khalid Abu Shab, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, Mr. Ashraf Shaqalaih, Head of Laboratory Medicine Department, Ms. Jihad Abu Ghosh and Ms. Mona Abu Shamatt from the TPFS, Mr. Farouq  Masrouji , Director of  Masrouji Group  as well as the faculty members and students.

Prof.Dr. An Najar appreciated the faculty's efforts to address critical health problems. Furthermore, the Dean Dr. Abu Shab appreciated the department's efforts to organize such important event, stressing that the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences always seeks to participate in the development of solutions to various health crises according to the university's vision and mission.

Ms. Abu Ghosh gave a briefing about TPFS and its endeavors to raise the awareness of thalassemia. She went on to highlight the importance of networking with governmental and non-governmental institutions to implement mutual projects for the welfare of our society.

The event included two scientific sessions that discussed a range of scientific topics and came out with the following recommendations:
o To develop safe blood transfusion services
o To reduce complications after blood transfusions
oTo urge community institutions to recruit thalassemia patients if proven their efficiency and skills
o To encourage the Palestinian society to accept thalassemia patients marriage
o To prepare the faculty students to read CBC Hemoglobin electrophoresis
o To increase the awareness of thalassemia in the Palestinian society 
o To  focus on the topic of genetic diseases in Palestine
o To encourage graduates to conduct research  on thalassemia
o To activate blood donation campaigns to provide it for thalassemia patients 
o To adopting units for thalassemia treatment in hospitals to increase the proportion of hemoglobin for thalassemia patients
